SOMERSET, Pa. – A motorist was taken into custody after leading law enforcement officials on a high-speed chase from Summit Township to the Berlin area. The motorist's vehicle didn't come to a stop until metal "spike strips" – designed to puncture tires and slow down a vehicle – were placed on the road and a Pennsylvania State Police cruiser forced the getaway car sideways in a tactic called the "pit maneuver," Somerset County District Attorney Molly Metzgar said. Metzgar said the person was in custody awaiting criminal charges, but she was still gathering details on the incident as of 1 p.m. Thursday. The incident started after a traffic stop was attempted in Summit Township earlier Thursday, she said. The high-speed chase ended along state Route 31 near Berlin. Somerset County Detectives and members of the Somerset County Drug Task Force joined state police in the investigation, she said. Once the car came to a stop, the person – whose name was not yet public – was taken into custody without further issues, Metzgar added. She said all law enforcement personnel was safe and that no injuries were reported in the pursuit.
