Sports Daily Breeze football previews, predictions for Friday's top Week 8 games

A look at Friday's top high school football games in the South Bay.

FRIDAY'S GAMES

Games start at 7 p.m. unless noted.

San Pedro (5-3, 0-2) vs. Banning (4-4, 0-2), Coliseum, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: The annual Battle for the Harbor is being played at the Coliseum. It's one of the best rivalries in the South Bay and also one of the closest. In the previous 87 meetings, San Pedro has 43 wins, Banning has 41 wins and three games have ended in a tie. The Pirates have won the last two games and four of the last five. The Pirates lost their Marine League opener against Carson (31-20) and then forfeited their game against Narbonne. The Pilots started with a forfeit against Narbonne and followed that with a frustrating 21-14 loss to Gardena. Banning's Steven Perez completed five of six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown and he rushed for 94 yards against Gardena. Marcus Jeronymo leads the San Pedro offense with 13 passing touchdowns and Petero Eneliko has nine rushing touchdowns. This should be closer than last season game that San Pedro won 42-20. It will be interesting to see if the Pirates can get on track after their bye week and if the Pilots can come out firing unlike last week.

Prediction: San Pedro

Gardena (7-0, 1-0) at Carson (4-3, 1-0), 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: The teams finished on top of the Marine League standings last season. Gardena defeated Carson 27-7 last season to earn the No. 1 seed going into the playoffs. The Panthers remained undefeated with their 21-14 win against Banning in their Marine League opener last week. Xavier Grant scored the game-winning touchdown. The Colts had their normal league bye week last week. They defeated San Pedro 31-20 on Oct. 4 to open their Marine League schedule. The Colts rushed for 259 yards and three touchdowns in the win, led by Kameryn Hurst's 139 yards. The Panthers are not going to give up the Marine League title easily.

Prediction: Gardena

Leuzinger (5-2, 0-2) at Culver City (6-1, 1-1)

Outlook: The Olympians dropped their second consecutive Bay League game, falling to Palos Verdes 21-14, despite Journee Tonga rushing for 279 yards. Leuzinger lost the two league games by a combined 12 points. Culver City lost to Mira Costa 56-34 last week despite an outstanding game by QB Seth Shigg (25 of 48 passing, 442 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, 110 yards rushing and two touchdowns). How did they lose? Mira Costa rushed for 575 yards and eight touchdowns. That fits into the Leuzinger game plan of a heavy dose of Tonga. Can the Culver City defense avoid getting worn down by the Leuzinger offensive line? Will the Leuzinger defense be able to slow down Shigg? There a lot of big questions in this important Bay League game.

Prediction: Leuzinger

Mira Costa (5-2, 2-0) vs. Inglewood (7-0, 2-0) at Coleman Stadium

Outlook: There's always a big Bay League game of the week and this week it is this clash between the Mustangs and Sentinels. Both teams have defeated Lawndale. Inglewood also has a 34-29 win over Leuzinger. Mira Costa is coming off its 56-34 win over Culver City, led by the big ground attack of AJ McBean (332 yards rushing, four touchdowns) and Liam Meeker (220 yards rushing, three touchdowns). Mira Costa attempted only three passes in the game. Inglewood can strike in numerous ways and usually that means a touchdown reception by Andre Nickerson (eight) or Ray Gilbert (five). The battle up front will be key. Can Mira Costa keep the Inglewood pass rush at bay and can the Mustangs mix up the offensive plan. The Mustangs will need more than three attempted passes in this game. The winner takes over sole possession of first place in the Bay League.

Prediction: Inglewood

Last week's predictions: 1-4

Season record: 25-16
