DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Danville has received a $1 million grant to grow more trees within the city.

City leaders said they plan on using the funds to increase canopy coverage in disadvantaged neighborhoods, establish maintenance plans, make a detailed tree inventory map and create educational programs showing how important trees are to Danville's well-being.

The USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program awarded the grant to the City. The money comes from the federal Inflation Reduction Act.

The City is also holding an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Activities planned for the event include sapling giveaways, tree care guides, and plant demonstrations. Also planned is "tree-via" and "poet-tree."

The Arbor Day event will be held at the Danville Public Library.
