ALDA — Darold "Dutch" Strong, 87, of Alda passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at his home.
Family graveside services will be at the Alda Cemetery. Pastor Carl Eliason will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army and United Veteran's Honor Guard. A gathering of friends and family will be planned at a later date.
All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be designated to Alda Fire Department or New Hope School in Cairo.
Dutch was born on April 1, 1937 in O'Neill, Neb., the son of Elmer and Eleanor (Sparks) Strong. He grew up in O'Neill and graduated from O'Neill High School. Following graduation, Dutch left Nebraska to work in the factories in California.
On October 4, 1960, Dutch was drafted in the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge on October 3, 1962.
Dutch was united in marriage to Beverly Cornelius on August 5, 1963. They made their home in South Dakota, Omaha, Grand Island and lastly Alda, as Dutch was employed as a truck driver for Ready Mix, and in the Maintenance Department at the Ordnance Plant. He was a dedicated employee as a mixer operator at Diamond Engineering before his retirement.
Dutch was an avid Husker fan and collected memorabilia over the years, focusing on the era of Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. He found peace in the outdoors and often could be heard telling Bob to "grab the rods" and just see what they could catch.
Dutch was also a skilled trapper and would spend his free time in the winter selling pelts in Fremont. Dutch enjoyed staying home with his family and many loved dogs. He loved his grandchildren and adored spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Alda; his children, Robert "Bob" (Kindra) Strong of Grand Island, and Elizabeth (Richard) Deines of Wakeeney, Kan.; his grandchildren, Jason (Becky) Strong, Jeremy (Dawnielle) Strong, Racheal Strong, Brent Deines, Emily Deines and Ayla (Lou); and five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Don Moore of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Diane Cornelius and Jana Cornelius of Grand Island; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Dutch was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marily Passieux and Beverly Moore; and a brother, Frances Strong.
