SHREVEPORT, LA. ( KTAL/KMSS )—According to the Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice, Caddo Parish leads the state with the highest number of youths in juvenile prisons across the state.

For comparison, Caddo Parish has a population of 226,386 and 108 juveniles incarcerated, while East Baton Rouge has a population of 448,467 and the second-highest number of 90 juveniles incarcerated.

The Caddo DA's office says the number is high because they got many young gang leaders and young criminal leaders off the streets, which has sent a message.

Wilbert Pryor is the Caddo Parish Special Assistant District Attorney, and he said, "The word spreads that you know if you get in trouble, it's not going to be going to juvenile court and going back home, that there's severe consequences, that there is a prison system for juveniles, and we are using it here in Caddo."

One alternative to incarceration is ankle monitoring, which is mainly used for gun possession charges, when a juvenile is caught with an illegal firearm but has not used it in a crime. They say the monitors are much improved and can not be removed like in the past. They can also help law enforcement know the location of the monitored individuals at all times.
