Sports David Johnson: A promising addition to the Grizzlies' roster

The Grizzlies signed David Johnson after promoting Pippen Jr.

After the Grizzlies upgraded Scotty Pippen Jr. from a two-way contract to a regular four-year contract, they made another move. The Grizzlies' P.R. team just announced the signing of David Johnson on X.com, formerly known as Twitter.

"The Memphis Grizzlies announced today that the team signed guard David Johnson. Per team policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Johnson (6-4, 203) appeared in 24 showcase and regular season games (nine starts) last season for the Grizzlies' NBA G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle. He averaged 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.0 steals in 26.6 minutes.

The 23-year-old competed in two NBA regular season games for the Toronto Raptors during the 2021-22 season and has made 97 NBA G League appearances over three seasons with the Hustle and Raptors 905 since he was selected by Toronto 47th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Louisville," the team wrote on X.

David Johnson expected to return to Memphis Hustle

The Grizzlies had an opening on their 21-man preseason roster, and they decided to use it on Johnson, who was the 47th pick in the 2021 draft. He appeared in just two NBA games with the Toronto Raptors as a rookie and has since spent three professional seasons in the G-League, first with the Raptors 905 and then one season with the Memphis Hustle.

Johnson also represented Team USA in the 3x3 U23 World Cup last month, and he was one of the leading scorers in the FIBA tournament, but the U.S. team fell short to Germany in the final game.

The Grizzlies still control his G-League rights, and it is probable that they will waive Johnson in the coming day so he can return to the Memphis Hustle team while still earning an Exhibit 10 bonus worth up to $77,5k for spending at least 60 days with their development team.
