SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The deadline for people who are owed money by San Diego County to file a claim for a refund has been extended.

On Monday, San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced the previous deadline of Sept. 22, which was Sunday, has been extended to Friday, Oct. 4.

Unclaimed monies include property tax refunds which are usually checks that remain uncashed because the postal service has deemed them undeliverable due to no forwarding address available. There are also countywide unclaimed monies through abandoned property or estates of deceased that need to be reunited with their rightful owners.

To find out if you are owed money by the county,.

Additionally, hard copies of the list of unclaimed refunds can be found at any of the following office locations:

  • Chula Vista branch: 590 Third Ave., Chula Vista, CA 91910
  • East County branch: 10144 Mission Gorge Rd., Santee, CA 92071
  • San Marcos branch: 141 East Carmel St., San Marcos, CA 92078
  • "Some possible returns are quite large — in the thousands, with the highest over $25,000!" said McAllister. "I'm sure people could use this money, so my staff and I are working hard to return it to its rightful owners."

If you are owed money, you must file a refund claim by Oct. 4. Any unclaimed moneys will be rolled into the county's general fund after this date.
