Deal: Cancer survivor sends care packages to help others

A breast cancer survivor who founded a charity that supports patients has spoken of the joy that helping others brings her.

Jo Knight, from Deal, in Kent, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, and started Preloved Reloved Cancer and Beyond four years later.

The volunteer service provides cancer patients with essential and practical items, such as wigs, specialist bras and mastectomy pillows, free of charge.

She told the BBC: "When I finished my treatment, I wanted to do something to make a difference. It just fills my heart with joy to help others."

After her diagnosis, Ms Knight had a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, which left her with persistent alopecia.

She began using a headscarf because of her condition and decided she should help others access such items, especially those facing financial difficulties.

"Cancer is bad enough, but when you may not have the funds to provide these sorts of items it is even worse."

Ms Knight's care packages, which are advertised at local hospitals and community groups, also aim to give people an "emotional boost".

"I know exactly what it feels like to be diagnosed and to go through treatment.

"Your world comes crashing down," the single mother said. "I could not have done it without the support from others."

Ms Knight said her vision moving forward was to create a safe space where cancer survivors could connect for advice and support.

"Unfortunately, cancer isn't going away," she said.
