Decatur takes steps to protect local animals

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Decatur has updated their animal cruelty laws, to protect pets and animals.

These changes were approved in a city council meeting earlier this month. They became effective immediately.

The City now prohibits the starving and mistreating of animals. They require that shelters are made of weather resistant material, have solid walls on all sides, a dry floor, sloped roof and are big enough for the animal to move around.

Changes have also been made to rules about tethering and tying animals up. The City prohibits choke collars, ropes, chains, or cords directly attached to the animal's neck, and collars that are too small. Leashes must be at least 12 feet long.

Animals also may not be tied up at a vacant property or to a vehicle. Sick animals or animals less than six months old should not be tethered either, according to the City of Decatur.

The city also requires sick animals to receive medical care and be separated from other animals to prevent the spread of disease.

Decatur asks that anyone who suspects that animal cruelty is being committed to contact Animal Control at 217-425-4508.
