Decomposed human remains were discovered by a kayaker in the Rouge River in Wayne on Wednesday, police said.

The remains were "tangled along the embankment" in the Lower Rouge River area near Pershing Street, according to a news release from Wayne police.

The kayaker reported the discovery shortly after 5 p.m. Detectives who responded to the scene confirmed the remains to be a human upper torso and initiated recovery efforts.

The Michigan State Police Marine Service Team retrieved the remains from the river, and on Thursday, recovered the lower half of the body in a nearby section of the river, Wayne police said.

"The human remains were transported to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office for further investigation," according to the police release. "The identity of the remains has not been determined."

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the remains is asked to contact Detective Lt. Springer at or 734-721-1414, ext. 1503.
