DeKalb County Sheriff: 32 arrested on drug charges in October
DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. ( WHNT ) — In the month of October, DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said his officers and several other agencies arrested 32 people on drug-related charges.
Sheriff Nick Welden said his officers, officers with the Ider, Crossville and Collinsville Police Departments along with the DeKalb County narcotics Agents arrested 32 people on drug-related charges.

Welden said the departments recovered 161 grams of methamphetamine, 16 grams of marijuana, four grams of fentanyl, seven grams of cocaine and four grams of synthetic marijuana in October.

On Oct. 1, Narcotics Agents went to a home in Henagar to serve warrants to 45-year-old Cory Matthew Frazier. During the arrest, agents reportedly found Frazier with marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and charged with second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and five warrants for failure to appear.
Also on Oct. 1, Welden said Dekalb County Deputies responded to a home in Fort Payne for a breaking and entering call. When deputies arrived, they reportedly smelled marijuana coming from the house. While searching the home, a trafficking amount of methamphetamine, marijuana, synthetic marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a firearm were found and taken. 49-year-old Brad Lee Randall was charged with trafficking illegal drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, first-degree possession of marijuana, person forbidden to possess a firearm and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Oct. 2, deputies went to a home on County Road 296 to serve felony warrants on 45-year-old Spencer Stefon Hawkins. While deputies were there, they found Hawkins with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and five warrants for failure to appear.
On Oct. 3, deputies responded to a disturbance call in Geraldine. When deputies arrived, they found 37-year-old Danny Charles Dixon who appeared to be under the influence in the roadway. Deputies found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia when searching the residence. Dixon was charged with public intoxication.
During the arrest of Dixon, 51-year-old Rebecca Macias Romero was also arrested during the search. She was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Oct. 4, officers with the Ider Police Department responded to a vehicle accident at Sunset Drive and Highway 75. Once on the scene officers found 36-year-old Lonnie Ryan Combs from Georgia at the accident. While searching the scene, officers found drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine and fentanyl. Combs was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Also on Oct. 4, deputies responded to a disturbance call near Wesley's Chapel Church. When deputies arrived, they found a vehicle behind the church with 23-year-old Braxton Lee Black and a small child inside the car. Deputies found Black to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Welden said DHR was called to the scene for the child. Black was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and third-degree domestic violence.
On Oct. 7, Narcotics Agents were reportedly in the area of U.S. Highway 11 and Highway 117 in Hammondville when they saw a beer can that was thrown from a vehicle. Agents stopped the vehicle and identified 34-year-old Shawn Conard as the driver. Agents found Conard with fentanyl, suboxone and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Also on Oct. 7, Narcotics Agents also conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11 and Winston Street after watching the driver of a car throw items out of the window. While searching the vehicle, agents found hydrocodone inside and several more things were thrown from the vehicle. 43-year-old David Ray Honea was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and criminal littering.
On Oct. 9, Officers with the Ider Police Department stopped a car along Highway 75 and Highway 117. During the stop, 35-year-old Cerah Melinda Lancaster and 43-year-old Steven William Warren were identified along with two juveniles. Officers found methamphetamine, Xanax and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Welden said DHR was called to the scene to pick up the children inside the vehicle. Lancaster was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, chemical endangerment of exposing a child, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and four warrants for failure to appear.
Warren was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and chemical endangerment of exposing a child.
Also on Oct. 9, Officers with the Collinsville Police Department responded to a disturbance call on Rains Court. Officers found 61-year-old Jan Marie Walker to be under the influence of an illegal substance due to her behavior. Officers found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia while searching the residence. Walker was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.
On Oct. 10, deputies stopped a vehicle on County Road 24 and County Road 179. Deputies reportedly found the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 44-year-old Melissa Motley Nixon was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Oct. 12, deputies along with officers with the Valley Head Police Department stopped a vehicle suspected to be driven by someone under the influence at Highway 11 and Highway 117. Officers found cocaine inside the vehicle. 38-year-old Edward Jason Loveless from Tennessee was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and a DUI (controlled substance).
On Oct. 13, deputies and officers with the Rainsville and Fyffe Police Departments responded to a burglary on Tumlin Road in Fyffe. When officers arrived, they found 58-year-old David Lamar Maynor at the residence and found him to be in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Maynor was charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree theft of property, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, second-degree promoting prison contraband and second-degree possession of marijuana.
On Oct. 15, deputies stopped a car on Highway 117 and found drug paraphernalia and a mix of cocaine and fentanyl inside the vehicle. 30-year-old Michael Hunter Traffanstedt was charged with a DUI (controlled substance), three counts of possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and third-degree theft of property.
On Oct. 18, deputies responded to a home on County Road 283 to serve outstanding warrants. When deputies arrived on the scene, Welden said several people ran from the home. Methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found inside the home. 64-year-old Tracy Dwayne Johnson was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and seven warrants for failure to appear.
On Oct. 20, deputies and officers with the Crossville Police Department stopped a car at the Marathon in Kilpatrick and found the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine. 37-year-old Oscar Orlando Zalazar Caceres was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.
Also on Oct. 20, deputies responded to a home on County Road 52 on a trespassing call. When deputies arrived, they made contact with 56-year-old Michael Lee Steele who was later found with methamphetamine. Steele was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.
A third arrest on Oct. 20 came when officers with the Collinsville Police Department stopped a vehicle for a suspected DUI due to the vehicle reportedly not maintaining its lane on Highway 11. While searching the vehicle, officers found methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and hydrocodone inside. 37-year-old Kenneth Michael Hotaling was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Oct. 23, Narcotics agents worked with officers with the Sylvania Police Department and DeKalb County Deputies on a call about a vehicle broken down on County Road 27 near County Road 121. When the agents and officers arrived, the found 54-year-old Kimberly Jan Hawkins as the driver. They determined Hawkins was under the influence of an illegal substance. She was found to be in possession of hydrocodone, which Welden said she did not have a prescription for. Hawkins was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
On Oct. 24, deputies stopped a vehicle on County Road 126. during the stop deputies reportedly noticed the driver was chewing on something that didn't appear to be gum. Welden said the driver was asked to remove what was in her mouth and she handed over a bag that contained methamphetamine. 48-year-old Christina Mabry Johnson was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence and two warrants for failure to appear.
Also on Oct. 24, deputies went to a home on County Road 762 to serve outstanding warrants on 39-year-old April Rebecca Shrader. After deputies arrived, they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia inside the home. Shrader was charged with possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, alias writ of arrest and eight warrants for failure to appear.
At the same residence, deputies arrested 32-year-old Eddy Dewayne Underwood for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.
On Oct. 25, deputies went to a home on County Road 689 to serve felony warrants. While there, deputies found an illegal substance inside the home. 48-year-old Michael Roger Ferguson and an 18-year-old were charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and loitering.
At the same house, 42-year-old Jessica Denise Wood was charged with four counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, four counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, second-degree possession of marijuana, loitering and five warrants for failure to appear.
On Oct. 26, deputies watched a vehicle that was reportedly swerving and not staying in its lane. After running the tag and finding the owner had active felony warrants, deputies stopped the vehicle. A trafficking amount of methamphetamine was found inside the vehicle. 49-year-old Glen Alan Uptain was charged with trafficking illegal drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Also on Oct. 26, deputies stopped a vehicle on County Road 505 and found the driver to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. DHR was notified due to a juvenile inside the vehicle. Welden said the child was then released to the mother. 35-year-old Joseph Michael Couch was charged with possession of a controlled substance and endangering the welfare of a child.
Finally, on Oct. 30, officers with the Collinsville Police Department stopped a car on I-59 for improper lane usage. Officers found a trafficking amount of methamphetamine, Xanax and drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. 47-year-old Darrell Louis Davis was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and two warrants for failure to appear.
Also during this stop, 32-year-old Marissa Ann Davis-Mooney was charged with trafficking illegal drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
The third arrest made in this traffic stop was for 54-year-old Christopher Berna Selman. Selman was charged with two counts of trafficking in illegal drugs, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.
Sheriff Welden said the war on drugs continues on, but if the department can save just one person from these substances, it would all be worth it.
"The war on drugs seems like it is never ending for sure, but we will fight it with everything we have, even to save just one person from this poison, makes it all worth it."
