There are exemptions:

  • A fur product that is "expressly authorized by federal or state law"

  • A fur product purchased for traditional tribal, cultural or spiritual purposes by a member of a federally- or state-recognized Native American tribe

  • A used fur item that was bought, sold, donated or owned by a person not in the primary business of selling such products, including a nonprofit, second-hand store or pawn shop

  • The manufacture for sale of a fur item using fur sourced exclusively from a used fur product

  • The term "fur product" does not include any animal skin that is converted into leather, nor does it include cowhide with the hair attached, lambskin or sheepskin with the fleece attached, wool or other fibers from livestock, or any pelt or skin preserved through taxidermy.

The ballot language is as follows:

Shall the voters of the City and County of Denver adopt an ordinance concerning a prohibition of fur products, and, in connection, beginning July 1, 2025, prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, display, sale, or trade of certain animal fur products in the City; and providing limited exceptions to the prohibition?

The group that brought this measure to the ballot, Pro-Animal Future, also brought a measure to ban slaughterhouses in Denver to the November ballot.
