ich. (WOOD) — A man drowned Saturday at Versluis Park in Plainfield Township, authorities say.

Around 6:15 p.m., crews were called to Versluis Lake for a swimmer who had gone under, according to Plainfield Fire Chief Kyle Svoboda.

"Preliminary information revealed the man went into the water, beyond the swim area, and did not resurface," the Kent County Sheriff's Office wrote in a release.

After about half an hour, Svoboda said the swimmer was pulled from the water. According to the sheriff's office, the county dive team was on its way when a bystander — described by deputies as a Good Samaritan — recovered the man.

First responders attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, but the swimmer was pronounced dead, Svoboda said.

Deputies termed the death a drowning and identified the man as a 44-year-old from Kentwood. His name was not released Saturday.

Svoboda told News 8 that Versluis Lake has significant depth past the buoys.

The sheriff's office says it is investigating the drowning.
