Des Moines Police releases names of officers shot following chase, crash

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department on Friday released the names of the officers who were involved in a shooting early Monday morning that left a suspect dead and two officers injured.

Officers with DMPD attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard early Monday morning. According to police, the driver of the vehicle initially stopped but sped off, leading officers on a chase that ended in a crash. Police said the officers attempted to get the driver out of the vehicle multiple times, including deploying a Taser . During the struggle the driver pulled out a gun and began shooting at the officers, police said.

The suspect, who has been identified as 37-year-old Joshua Dean Green from Carlisle, was shot and died at the scene. His passenger, a 47-year-old woman, was not injured and has not been charged.

Vehicle crashes into Des Moines car wash, driver charged

Two Des Moines officers suffered gunshot wounds and were sent to local hospitals. Senior Police Officer Jacob Boekhoff, a two-year veteran of DMPD, suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and has been released from the hospital . Senior Police Officer Cade Moritz, a two-year veteran of DMPD, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and remains hospitalized.

Captain Chad Steffen, a 20-year veteran of the department, and Senior Police Officer Frankie Contreras, a three-year law enforcement veteran, were also involved in the shooting. They were uninjured and have been placed on standard administrative leave.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and DMPD are continuing to investigate this officer-involved shooting.
