D-iii Soccer Power Falls To Wilkes Men

EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University opened its Freedom Conference men’s soccer
season on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over defending conference champion Drew
University at Ralston Field.

The Colonels improved to 4-1-1 overall. Drew, which entered the match
ranked 17th in NCAA Division III, falls to 4-2-1.
Mike Bridy gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead at 14:26 of the opening half when he
drilled a shot into the back of the net off a cross from Steve Uhas. Drew
answered with a goal at the 26:10 mark to tie the score at 1-1.

The Rangers were awarded a penalty kick after a Wilkes foul in the goal
box. Ian Klein stepped up and found the left side of the net for the score.

The Colonels got the game-winning goal at the 73:03 mark of the second
period. Bridy sent a cross that Paul Gideon forwarded to Andy Curry, who
proceeded to push a shot past Drew goalie Dan Biggers to give Wilkes the 2-1
lead.

Wilkes goalkeeper Dominik Proctor stopped eight shots. Biggers had five
saves in goal for Drew.

FIELD HOCKEY

Wilkes 3, Delaware Valley 1

WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes opened its Freedom Conference schedule with a victory
at Artillery Park.

The 20th-ranked Colonels (5-1 overall) scored their goals in the first
half. Kathy Kemper, Lauren Risser and Melissa Quinn scored for Wilkes, and
goalkeepers Hilary Weber and Jennifer Cole combined for two saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Wilkes 1, Drew 0

EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes won its conference opener at Ralston Field and
improved to 4-3 overall.

Wilkes got the only goal of the game at the 75:37 mark of the second half
when Caitlin Dukas took a cross from Christina Waldele and beat Drew
goalkeeper Genie Valantassis with a shot.

Colonels keeper Katie Green made five saves to earn the shutout.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

College Misericordia 6, Arcadia 3

DALLAS TWP. – Misericordia got singles victories from Mallory Beiber,
Sherri Bell and Olivia Jezowski and swept the three doubles matches to down
Arcadia.



Wyoming Area at Berwick, ppd.

WEST PITTSTON – The Berwick at Wyoming Area game was postponed until 7 p.m.
today. It will be one of eight games involving area teams being played
tonight.
