Discover Texas’ Hidden Grand Canyon – Nature’s Best Kept Secret!

Why would you go to the "Grand Canyon" when we have our own canyon right here in Texas. Yes, it's second to the Grand Canyon, but I've been to Arizona and their barbeque is terrible. Stay close to the Lone Star State and explore your fascination with canyons right here in your own backyard.

The Location

If you're from Texas, you already know I was referring to Palo Duro Canyon, near Amarillo and Canyon, Texas. This canyon is certainly "grand" in it's features with depths from 800 to 1000 feet (that's enough to keep me away from the edges). The average space between the canyon faces runs between are six miles with it hitting about twenty-five miles at some of it's wider points.

The Facts

The canyon was formed by erosion which is attributed to "The Prairie Dog Fork Red River" (yes, it's the first time I've heard of that too). The canyon also features caves and tall rock spires known as "hoodoos" (again, first time for me too). Of course anywhere there is water there is going to be an abundance of wildlife as well.

Plan A Visit

Just in case you need a "hole in the ground" explained to you, there appears to be several guided tours available. All joking aside, these tours seem like a very good idea, because I certainly wouldn't want to be driving too close to a 1000 foot drop, if it's even allowed. Those who've visited the park area suggest it's anywhere from a good half-day visit to a two or three day type of commune with nature experience.
