Former president Donald Trump has criticized Oprah Winfrey after she hosted a livestream event with his 2024 rival, Vice President Kamala Harris , earlier this week.

The event, billed as "United for America," was aimed at riding a wave of support that Harris has enjoyed since entering the race after President Joe Biden quit his bid for reelection in. July.

The conversation focused on voter registration and participation and the Democratic nominee's plans to cut costs for the middle class, restore abortion rights and address gun violence .

Celebrities including Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez participated in the event, which also shared the stories of ordinary voters as Harris promoted her message over the course of 90 minutes from Michigan, a battleground state in November's election.

Trump, the Republican nominee, took to his platform Truth Social on Saturday to criticize Winfrey, a registered independent who has thrown her support behind Harris, for hosting the event.

"A long time ago, Oprah Winfrey asked me to do her last Network Television Show. The final week of her show was a big deal, and it was my honor, with my family, to do it," he wrote on the platform

"When I watched her interview yesterday with a woman who is destroying, through her complete and total incompetence, America, I couldn't help but think this isn't the real Oprah, this isn't a person that wants millions of people, from prisons and mental institutions, and terrorists, drug dealers, and human traffickers, from all over the World, pouring into our Country."

Newsweek has contacted the Trump and Harris campaigns for comment via email. Winfrey has been contacted for comment via email.

Ahead of Thursday's event, Winfrey s aid her aim was to get voters excited to vote.

Afterwards, she wrote on Facebook that she hoped viewers and participants "left informed and inspired to do something. Remind the people in your life of the privilege and power of their vote because united we win."

In his Truth Social post, Trump also claimed that Harris had struggled to answer questions about inflation and immigration, adding that she is "mentally unfit" to lead the country.

"Kamala looked really foolish, couldn't answer the simplest of questions on Inflation, the Cost of Goods, or our very porous and dangerous Border—No leader there, and Oprah just wanted to crawl under a table!" Trump wrote. "Comrade Kamala Harris is mentally unfit to be President. She knows it, and so does everyone else!"

Some Trump supporters also mocked Harris for her lengthy responses to questions during the event, with Republican Senator Eric Schmitt calling one of her answers a "word salad."

But many responded to Winfrey's post to praise Harris, with some saying it had cemented their decision to vote for the Democratic nominee.
