Dozens of illegal explosive devices found in Newton house garage, 1 person arrested
One person is in custody after dozens of illegal explosives devices were found Tuesday in a Newton garage.
The investigation into the explosives began Tuesday morning when a suspect fled from a North Newton police officer during an unrelated traffic stop, the Newton Police Department said on social media.
Newton police joined the chase and found the suspect inside a garage in the 500 block of East 11th Street in Newton. While in the garage, officers found roughly 60 "suspicious items consistent with homemade explosives," the department said.
"The Wichita Bomb Squad and ATF agents examined the items and believed them to be illegal explosive materials," officials said.
The explosives were seized and taken to another location where they were detonated at 5:30 p.m.
One resident of the house is in custody, and police are looking for another person. The original suspect from the traffic stop is not connected to the house where the explosives were found, but was arrested on misdemeanor warrants, police said.
