Dozens of Pennsylvania sheriffs endorse Trump for president: 'Proud to back him'

A total of 49 Pennsylvania sheriffs endorsed former President Donald Trump last week.

The officials, who serve in counties across the state, attached their names to an Oct. 9 announcing their support.

The sheriffs often hear from constituents who want safe communities and oppose "radical defund-the-police agendas" from "career politicians," the release says.

"That is why we are proudly standing with President Donald J. Trump and wholeheartedly endorse his candidacy for President of the United States," the letter continues.

The sheriffs wrote that Trump understands the "critical role" law enforcement plays in maintaining safety, stability and "law and order." It's for that reason they are confident in the former president's leadership and ability to "safeguard" the U.S., according to the release.

"We know that President Trump backs the blue, and we are proud to back him as the 47th President of the United States of America," the officials said.

Trump is the only candidate who continues to support law enforcement, "law and order" and the sheriffs' duty to keep their communities safe, they wrote. The officials said that support has existed since before Trump launched his initial presidential bid in 2015.

His assistance is most evident when it comes to issues like security concerns at the U.S. southern border, according to the sheriffs.

"Under President Trump, we had a secure border and proper enforcement of our immigration laws. World leaders respected President Trump, and border crossings fell," the release reads.

Since Trump left office, the border has "swung open" to thousands of "border crossers" and "unimaginable quantities of lethal drugs" like fentanyl and meth, the officials wrote. Crime and "devastation" have followed, according to the sheriffs.

"President Trump understands that we cannot have a functioning country without borders. He understands the destruction that an open border has brought to our country, our commonwealth, and our communities," the release continues.

Last month, an activist group of "law enforcement leaders" issued an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, saying in a it reflected her "unwavering" commitment to public safety and the "rule of law."

"As police leaders who have led law enforcement agencies and the major national law enforcement leadership groups, we know first-hand what it will take to make our communities safer – and that includes having Kamala Harris as our next President," Sue Riesling, chair of Police Leaders for Community Safey, wrote.

The Harris campaign did not return a request for comment from The National News Desk.
