Dr. Dre gets good news in hostile legal clash with ex-marriage counselor

A restraining order obtained against Dr. Dre by the rapper's one-time marriage counselor was revoked by a Los Angeles judge Tuesday.

The judge ruled that Dr. Charles Sophy - a psychiatrist who counseled the Compton, California native, 59, and his ex-wife Nicole Young , 54 - failed to provide compelling evidence to make the temporary restraining order permanent, TMZ reported Tuesday.

Sophy, who counseled the rapper and his ex-wife during their marriage and as a mediator following their split, had received a temporary restraining order in October , and appeared in person Tuesday, the outlet reported.

Sophy told the court that Dr. Dre - who had appeared by Zoom on Tuesday - had threatened him repeatedly in February of 2023 via 'abusive' text messages, according to TMZ; and that his past conduct was 'consistent with the text messages.'

The exchanges came a year and two months after Dr. Dre's acrimonious divorce had been finalized in December of 2021.

Sophy previously said in legal docs that Dr. Dre sent texts vowing he would 'make [Sophy] pay for that,' calling him a 'piece of s***' and a 'b****' amid his text tirades.

Dr. Dre had acknowledged sending Sophy angry texts, but said they were not clear threats, the outlet reported.

The judge Tuesday revoked the restraining order, which ordered the musical artist to stay at least 100 yards away from Sophy, according to TMZ.

In Tuesday's hearing, Sophy told the court that Dr. Dre accused him of being racist, which Sophy said is disproven by decades of work he's done in social services with people of all races.

Sophy previously said in court docs he has been intimated by the rapper's threats, and has been donning a bulletproof vest as a precautionary measure as a result.

Sophy said in legal docs that the Beats Electronics founder had falsely accused him of orchestrating a smear campaign against him amid the split with Young, the outlet reported.

Sophy previously told the court that Dr. Dre falsely claimed Sophy arranged for an outside party to say inflammatory remarks to media outlets about him.

The Forgot About Dre artist, whose full name is Andre Young, at one point had his associates masquerading as FBI agents to contact him at the gated community where he resides, Sophy claimed in the suit, according to TMZ.

Sophy told the court in the aftermath of the incident - in which he said the associates impersonating federal officials threatened to physically harm him - he has spent additional money on securing his home.

Sophy said that as result of the incident, he has worn bulletproof vests and caps when he departs his house, the outlet reported.

Dr. Dre's attorney Howard King told TMZ: 'Dr. Sophy filed his suit only after he failed to pressure Mr. Young into dropping efforts to get Dr. Sophy punished for dereliction of duties and incredible incompetence.'

King said that Dr. Dre in 2023 filed a confidential complaint with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California about his experience with Sophy.

King said Dr. Dre's complaint was done with the intent so officials would revoke Sophy's medical license 'to provide mental health counseling to needy patients' after the events that took place amid the divorce.

'In gross violation of all applicable standards of care, Dr. Sophy inserted himself into a contentious divorce while he simultaneously "treated" not only Mr. and Mrs. Young, but their children,' King told TMZ.

He continued, 'He was terminated when it was revealed that he was encouraging one of their children to take sides against Mr. Young, even encouraging his son to go to the press with false allegations in order to force a financial settlement that he recommended.'

King said Sophy 'has consistently rebuffed' officials attempts to probe the aforementioned allegations, describing his efforts in filing the suit as 'desperate.'

At the time of his split from Young - who shares son Truice, 26, and daughter Truly, 23, with - Dr. Dre was seen on Instagram posed in front of a balloon decoration that spelled out, 'DIVORCED AF.'

The musical artist in 2022 headlined the lauded Super Bowl halftime show in Los Angeles, which also featured Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent.
