Driver in stolen car shot by police after reportedly trying to ram officer in roadway
The driver of a stolen vehicle was shot in the chest by a Troy police officer Tuesday after he tried to ram the officer in the roadway with the car while police attempted to box him in, officials said.
The driver is in custody and hospitalized in stable condition.
According to the Troy Police Department, the incident unfolded when officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on East Big Beaver Road, west of Daley Street. While the vehicle was stopped in traffic, police tried to box it in and the driver began to ram his way out, toward one officer. That officer fired his service weapon, striking the driver in the upper body, police said.
Medical aid was provided and the driver was transported to a local hospital, police said.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is expected to investigate the incident, as requested by the Troy Police Department.
