SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Authorities have identified the driver who died Friday after their pickup went into the Missouri River. We also know how a passenger in the vehicle got to safety.

Sioux City Police say the crash happened at about 6:35 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, and involved a pickup going southbound on Interstate 29.

According to police, the crash happened near the railroad bridge when the driver had a medical episode. Police believe this caused the pickup to go off I-29, through a fence, over a walking trail and into the water.

Monday morning, police identified the pickup's driver as 55-year-old Delana H. Jackson of Sioux City. His body was recovered from the pickup when crews were able to tow the pickup out of the river. Because of how deep the pickup was and the river's current, it took until 4:40 p.m. Friday for crews to get the vehicle out of the Missouri.

There was also a passenger in the pickup at the time of the crash. Police say the passenger jumped into the back seat of the pickup and broke out the back window to escape the sinking vehicle.

Sioux City Police have not identified the passenger. Their current condition is unknown but police did say Friday that the passenger was taken to a local hospital.
