Driver sped up to 108 mph in Henderson crash that killed 14-year-old

HENDERSON, Nev. (FOX5) - A driver has been arrested in a crash involving three vehicles late June.

Nevada State Police said the crash happened on Tuesday, June 25 around 12:17 a.m. The vehicles crashed in the area of US 95 southbound, north of the Russell southbound off-ramp.

Police aid the driver of a Dodge Charger, Jacqueline Perez-Garcia, was traveling "in a reckless manner" at 108 mph on southbound US 95. Police said he struck the left rear of a Toyota Yaris.

The Toyota then rotated and entered a different lane where it struck a Nissan pick-up truck.

Police said the Toyota then went over a concrete barrier and traveled down an embankment.

Emergency personnel arrived and started to provide first aid. However, a 14-year-old in the Toyota, later identified as Tanya Fernandez, died at the scene. Two other people in the Toyota, along with two people in the Nissan, were taken to the hospital.

Police said the driver of the Dodge fled on foot but was later located Monday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on the following charges:

  • Police said Perez-Garcia appeared in court on Tuesday and was given a $25,00 bail.

    "The Nevada Highway Patrol encourages anyone who is involved in a crash to remain on scene, render aid, and provide the necessary information to the involved parties," police said. "Any person that flees from the scene of a crash involving injuries and or death may be arrested for felony charges."

    The investigation is being conducted by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol -Southern Command Multidisciplinary Investigation & Reconstruction Team.

    The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Southern Command said they have investigated 35 fatal crashes resulting in 43 fatalities. 2024 fatalities data is preliminary and may change/be updated based on final investigation and coroner reports.
