DWU women upend Augustana for exhibition victory
SIOUX FALLS - The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team knocked off Augustana 63-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Elmen Center, as the Tigers defeated the NCAA Division II foes for the first time in 22 years.
The game was an exhibition for the Tigers, while it counted for Augustana, moving the Vikings to 1-2.
Augie led 10-2 in the opening minutes of the game but DWU evened the score 14-14 at the end of the opening 10 minutes and led 33-30 at the halftime break. A 17-5 run to close the third quarter put the Tigers up 53-39 after three frames and Augustana only got the game into single digits once in the fourth quarter.
Morgan Edelman had 11 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Tigers, with 11 points from Rylee Rosenquist off the bench. Emma Yost and Isabel Ihnen each had eight points, with seven rebounds from Ihnen and Lacey Sprakel and Anna Campbell each scored seven points.
DWU was 13-for-16 on free throws, holding an advantage over the 6-for-10 day for Augustana on free throws. DWU shot 42.6% from the field (23-for-54), while forcing a 33.3% shooting day for the Vikings, including 2-for-18 on 3-pointers.
For Augustana, Michaela Jewett had 13 points, with 12 from Johanna Miller and 10 from Jennifer Aadland. Avon native Lauren Sees had six points and five rebounds.
DWU (3-2 overall) will host Jamestown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Corn Palace.
