Tip of cap due to Eagles’ defense. Philadelphia pitched a shutout in the second half. Their pass rush did a great job of closing in on Mahomes enough to force misses (and a crushing intentional grounding penalty), and after surrendering 121 yards on the ground in the first half, Philadelphia gave up just 47 in the final two periods. While it wasn’t perfect (and included a handful of tackling issues, especially in the secondary), this unit’s collective effort was able to keep the Eagles in a game in which their offense was struggling plenty. Hurts admitted after the game the Eagles’ offense “didn’t help (the defense) out enough,” but with the help of a key fourth-quarter turnover — Kansas City’s second of the night — the Eagles stayed afloat long enough for their offense to come alive. That type of complementary, clutch football is what separates average from elite.

Gritty, Not Pretty - Iggles Blitz
The second half was a different story. The Eagles kept the Chiefs off the scoreboard. That was a mixture of good defense and good luck. The Eagles made key plays. They also got lucky with some KC drops, including one from MVS that might have won the game. The Chiefs run game was great in the first half, but only produced 47 yards after halftime. Mahomes still had some good moments, but even he couldn’t overcome his teammates mistakes. Give the Eagles defense a lot of credit. They did what they could to limit the Chiefs. They slowed down Kelce (7-44 for the game). The defense tackled well. They got pressure on Mahomes in key situations. KC only had one play go more than 20 yards (24-yard run by Pacheco). Their longest pass play was 17-yards. The Chiefs had to play small-ball and it didn’t work too well. [...] Sean Desai beat another good QB. His defense shut out both the Dolphins and Chiefs offenses in the second half. I’m guessing Jonathan Gannon couldn’t have pulled that off.

It’s time to embrace these ugly Eagles wins - BGN
Imagine being a Lions, 49ers or Cowboys fan last night, knowing you could gain a game on the Eagles if they lost to the Chiefs, seeing them down 17-7 at the half. For every other team in the NFL, that game is a loss. Heck, the Chiefs NEVER lose games at home when leading by 10 points. Andy Reid NEVER loses a game out of the bye week. Last night, they did, and it doesn’t matter how ugly it was or how the game was trending through three quarters. You don’t gain extra games in the standings for style points. The Eagles, despite their warts, have beaten all comers and have proven they’re the best in the NFL. Now, they may lose this Sunday to Buffalo. The Bills’ 6-5 record isn’t great, they’ve suffered from an uneven offense and fired their offensive coordinator last week. But on a short-week after a big win over the defending Super Bowl champs, it wouldn’t shock me to see a slight let-down game from the Eagles this year, although Hurts and Nick Sirianni have proven to be immune to such things in their tenure here. Which is all the more reason not to care how this team does it. They find a way. They are so talented, and their QB is so cool, they can usually overcome sloppiness and mistakes and do what needs to be done.

Late in the first half of Monday night’s Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles , Patrick Mahomes had a plan. Eagles rookie defensive tackle Jalen Carter had one too. Mahomes had just connected with running back Jerick McKinnon on a short gain, setting the Chiefs up with a 2nd and 1 at the Philadelphia 25-yard line with just a few seconds left left in the first half. But with Kansas City out of time outs, Mahomes needed to spike the football to give Harrison Butker and the rest of the field goal team time to get onto the field to try a short field goal before halftime. That’s when Carter, who was in on the tackle of McKinnon, remembered something he saw on YouTube.

“I don’t think we played clean tonight. I don’t think we played to our standard, nowhere near our standard,” Hurts said in his postgame press conference. “But I think the thing that you can’t test or quantify is the resilience that a team has, the ability to persevere and see through things and overcome things, and this team has that. We’ve yet to put up a performance to our standards, but we continue to find ways to win. When you win games like we’ve won games, that builds a ton of character. We’re kind of in, I guess, character development mode with the games we’ve played and how we’ve won. It’ll only serve us for great things in the future.”

Seven of the Eagles’ 11 true possessions against the Chiefs ended in punts. Another ended in an interception. But three ended in touchdowns, and that was enough for Philadelphia to notch a cathartic 21-17 victory over the squad that bested it in Super Bowl LVII. Not everything has always clicked for the Eagles this season. While they sit atop these power rankings, they rank just fifth in offensive expected points added per drive and 23rd (!) in defensive EPA per drive. They’re an unsustainable 6-1 in one-score games. But they also have so many ways to win. On a night when Jalen Hurts was off his game (he had just 150 yards passing, and 27 percent of those came on one throw), A.J. Brown couldn’t get anything going, and the defense leaned more on drops from the Chiefs pass catchers than its own playmaking ability, other players came through for Philly. D’Andre Swift picked up 76 rushing yards on just 12 carries, regularly gashing the Chiefs defense on the ground, and tacked on another 31 yards on three receptions. DeVonta Smith tallied 99 receiving yards on six catches. And, of course, this team needs only 9 yards to pick up a first down, as they tush pushed their way forward in several crucial moments. Monday proved that no matter how many close games the Eagles play, they will always be a tough out for even the best opponents. They just have too many ways they can win.

Eagles adjust to not having Dallas Goedert: The Eagles turned to a rotation of tight ends and more personnel diversity without their star tight end. The Eagles started the game by rotating between Jack Stoll and Grant Calcaterra at tight end, with a loose tendency of Stoll playing more on run plays and Calcaterra playing more on pass plays. Despite Calcaterra running more routes, Stoll was targeted more often and caught one pass for 3 yards. Calcaterra left for the locker room with an ankle injury in the third quarter and didn’t return. Stoll became an every-down tight end at that point. Calcaterra returned to the sideline and tried to jog, but he never returned to the game. The Eagles spent most of the game in 11 personnel, as usual, but they also utilized 10 personnel for a few plays. Until that point, Philadelphia hadn’t used a four-wide receiver set since Week 13 of last season. They also ran a few plays out of 21 personnel. Traditionally, 21 personnel is a halfback and fullback, but for the Eagles this season, it means two halfbacks on the field. They used much less 12 personnel than usual, partially because of the tight end depth and the game script. It seemed sensible to ignore the Eagles tight ends in fantasy leagues once Goedert went down with his injury, and this further confirmed that.

But even when that happened, the Eagles still found a way to limit the Chiefs. Josh Sweat forced Mahomes into an intentional grounding. It was the type of performance that shows why Desai deserves to be on head-coaching lists in a few months. “The defense kept making plays,” Sirianni said, “waiting for the offense to make plays, and they did in a critical time.” Sirianni was referring to a 42-yard catch by DeVonta Smith that set up Hurts’ touchdown run to give the Eagles the lead. The play was actually a check that Hurts made at the line of scrimmage. Hurts likes to say he’s a triple-threat quarterback, and it was his mind that helped the Eagles win the game. “Good quarterbacks make three or four plays that change a game with their mind,” Sirianni said. “They got to do a great job throwing the ball, running the show, but they make three or four checks a game with their mind that can make big differences.” “Those things kind of come to you in a game,” Hurts said. “You make those plays when you need to make those plays.”

The Chiefs can’t make this many mistakes and expect to win against a good team. Kansas City had two red-zone turnovers in the game, both of which took place at the Philadelphia 14-yard line. In the second quarter, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an end-zone interception. Then in the fourth quarter, tight end Travis Kelce had the ball punched out, ending a promising drive that could have given the Chiefs a 10-point lead. Kansas City also took seven penalties that cost it 55 yards. And yet — despite all that — the Chiefs could have won the game if wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling hadn’t blatantly dropped a perfect pass in the fourth quarter. His drop was just one of 26 accumulated by Kansas City’s pass-catchers this season.

As far as the NFC East is concerned, the Cowboys are still in need of help. The next couple of weeks will be very interesting as Dallas will play on back to back Thursdays with their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Washington Commanders followed by their Thursday Night Football contest against the Seattle Seahawks . Those games will be followed by Sundays where the Eagles will host the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers, respectively. These next two weeks will then take us to the next matchup between Dallas and Philadelphia, and while the rivalry is what it is, the reality is that if Philly does not lose between now and then that the true significance of it could dwindle a bit. There is an argument to be made that the most critical game remaining for Dallas right now is the Seahawks game given that Seattle could be the primary contender for the #5 seed and right now that is the most probable path to the playoffs for the Cowboys.

Here is a question, though. If Tyrod Taylor is off injured reserve and ready to go Week 14 against the Green Bay Packers , the week after the Giants’ late-season bye, who starts at quarterback? Before Sunday’s victory over the Washington Commanders, I would have said it was a no-brainer that Taylor had to start. My argument would have been that in an already frustrated locker room Brian Daboll would risk losing player support if he did anything else. Now? I think that’s open for debate. This Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots will have to factor in. The Patriots are also 3-8, but they are coming off a bye and Bill Belichick has always made life miserable for young quarterbacks. Remember Sam Darnold admitting he was seeing ghosts against New England? As of now, I think I’m still siding with starting Taylor. His experience, especially with two games remaining against the Philadelphia Eagles, could be invaluable. If DeVito lights it up against the Patriots, though, that feeling could change.
