Early votes show 2 candidates in clear lead for Willits City Council, 2 still in tight race

hree open seats on the Willits City Council have led to a competitive race. As of Wednesday morning, it's clear that two former law enforcement officers are likely to win followed by one of the two schoolteachers on the ballot.

Early voting results report incumbent Vice Mayor Gerardo "Gerry" Gonzalez and Tom Allman neck-and-neck with 28.6% and 28.8% of the votes respectively.

Gonzalez has served on the council for eight years. He was chief of police for the Willits Police Department for 13 years.

He's likely to be joined on the council by Allman, a realtor who also served as Mendocino County Sheriff for 13 years.

The competition for the third seat remains tight with activist and schoolteacher Robin Leler with 17.4% of the vote followed by math teacher Matthew Alaniz at 16.65% – a 13-vote difference.

Winners of the election will go on to serve four-year terms starting Dec. 1. Councilmembers have the opportunity to serve as mayor on a rotational basis.
