GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and doctors are reminding people over the age of 40 to get their yearly mammograms.

Associate Professor in Breast Surgical Oncology and Director of Breast Care Services at ECU Health Karin Chambers said there are preventative steps you can take.

"Some of the biggest linking factors to breast cancer are things like a strong family history or things like obesity," Chambers said. "Increased body weight can increase your risk of breast cancer. Also, so just being aware of that, maintaining as best you can, a healthy diet, healthy activity level and trying to fight the big fight that way."

ECU Health offers free breast cancer screens throughout the year. To learn more about these clinics, visit .
