Eddie Redmayne 's latest character is an icon of the Seventies, much like the flared trousers he wore to the Berlin premiere of The Day of the Jackal on Tuesday night.

The new series, based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth , is a modern interpretation of the classic 1973 political thriller movie starring Edward Fox.

The 42-year-old actor sported a wardrobe of the era as he posed on the red carpet in a retro oversized suit and a dark shirt and white tie.

The show stars Redmayne, who plays the elusive assassin the Jackal, said he envied some of his character's steely qualities.

He said: 'I wish I was as refined, impeccably groomed and meticulous. I have none of the grace of the Jackal. I'm s****y in a crisis. He gets cooler in a crisis; I get sweatier.'

When the Jackal carries out a successful assassination on a prominent political figure, he sparks a frantic cat-and-mouse chase between himself and MI6 agent Bianca, played by Lashana Lynch .

The Bond actress, 36, who is co-executive producer on the series, also made an appearance on the red carpet at the Zoo Palast, Berlin.

Lynch, who is heavily pregnant, wore an billowing Balenciaga black gown with a giant bow that hid her growing baby bump.

The star and her actor husband, Zackary Momoh, 36, announced the pregnancy last month as she debuted her bump at the New York premiere of the show.

During an interview with Vogue, the mother-to-be opened up about her red carpet maternity wardrobe.

She explained: 'I feel comfortable and at ease, but also in charge of myself. Some red carpet gowns, although beautiful and stunning, feel like you're putting on a different part of yourself, whereas here I feel like I'm celebrating the female figure.'

The new series is now available to watch on Sky.
