Eden Township's new electronic speed sign reveals more traffic, faster speeds than anticipated
When: Eden supervisors meeting, Oct. 14.
What happened: After just two weeks of operation on Hess Road, the township's new electronic speed sign has revealed more traffic and faster speeds than anticipated.
Background: As a result of multiple complaints about speeding and dangerous intersections in the township, supervisors decided to purchase the sign to record data.
Details: In the first two weeks of using the sign on Hess Road, about 27,000 vehicles traveled the road in one direction, Jason Skonberg, deputy emergency management coordinator, said. The highest speed recorded was 97 mph, with multiple others in the 70 to 80 mph range.
The cost: The board approved the purchase of the sign at a cost of $3,162 in September.
Quotable: "I was impressed with the data," Supervisor Joseph Rineer said.
What's next: The sign will be used on other roads to get an overview of traffic in the township. Supervisors also hope the sign will help as a speeding deterrent. The township may use the information when contacting the state Department of Transportation about dangerous locations.
