HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — An elementary school in Homewood is celebrating its 100th birthday. Over the years, thousands of students have walked the halls of Edgewood Elementary. Peggy Goldschmidt graduated from Edgewood Elementary in 1947. "You know, when I started school here, it was during the second World War," Goldschmidt said. If you ask a current student about that period in time, their memory isn't quite as good. "My brother read a book about it," said kindergartener Thomas Gibson. Things at Edgewood have changed in the past 100 years. Classes have gone from pen and paper to laptops and screens. But some things still stay the same. When asked about the best parts of going to Edgewood, past and present students had similar answers. "Probably the pizza," said Gibson. "The lady in the lunchroom was wonderful. She was the best cook, great food," Goldschmidt added. For the next week, students will get the chance to see artifacts from their school's century of teaching. "Preservation, showing our kids that their history matters, their parents' history matters. And to see that they are a part of history in the making," said 4th grade teacher Amber Broadhead. The school now had a place on the Alabama Historical Commission. "The possibilities knowing that your school has made a difference in preserving their past," Broadhead added. Edgewood Elementary planted a time capsule with mementos from every graduating class that will be opened in another 100 years.
