SHRM Chapters receive Superior Merit award 23-24
Western Illinois University's Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter received a 2023-24 Superior Merit award designation from the national chapter of SHRM for providing excellent growth and development opportunities for student chapter members.
"I commend the achievements of our WIU SHRM chapter which are the result of the dedication of its student leaders and members. Their commitment to the field of human resources is impressive and because of their efforts, the future of the profession is very bright" Susan Stewart, professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at WIU, said.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and SHRM engagement.
SHRM student chapters can earn an award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, from May 1, 2023, to April 30, 2024. The WIU SHRM student chapter had a busy year. They invited many HR professionals to make presentations and discuss HR certifications, and student members also held value-added HR internships.
WIU Receives Insight Into Diversity 2024 Higher Education Excellence In Diversity (HEED) Award
Western Illinois University received the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — WIU will be featured, along with 113 other recipients, in the November/December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine. This is the first year WIU has been named as a HEED Award recipient.
"Western Illinois University strives to champion diversity initiatives across our campuses. Our university community is mindful that social justice calls for ongoing dedication, and we pause to appreciate this recognition that highlights Western's ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive campus environments, programs, and policies that ensure every person feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive," WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup said.
Insight Into Diversity magazine selected WIU to recognize the efforts made by individuals and offices across the institution to create, foster and maintain an equity-minded community. These ongoing initiatives reflect the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion, showcasing the work that has been done and continues to be done throughout the campus, as highlighted by WIU's JIDE Director, Carl Ervin.
"The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, supplier diversity, and many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion," Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine said. "We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus."
