El Paso's Salvation Army brings Thanksgiving joy with record-breaking meal giveaway
The Salvation Army of El Paso brought the spirit of giving Thursday by handing out a record-breaking number of free meals.
The Salvation Army hosted a Thanksgiving drive offering holiday meals to families in need from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 4300 East Paisano Drive.
The meals consisted of the traditional Thanksgiving essentials: turkey, stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry plus a slice of pie.
Over 600 meals were handed out, a new record according to the Salvation Army.
Joanna Estrada, the public relations manager for the Salvation Army in El Paso said,
Thanksgiving brings people together.RECOMMENDED:
Donors and volunteers from Top Golf, Pepsi, Oro Temple No. 9 Shriners came together to make this holiday gesture possible.
The food was delivered via a drive-thru, a practice Estrada said they kept from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We realized we were able to help more people this way, we handed out so many more meals than we had done in previous years through the drive-thru," Estrada said. "And that success just became the new norm for us and this is what we do now."
Meals were also at shelters and migrant centers, bringing the total of Thanksgiving dinners to over 1,000.
