Elba woman charged with murder

ELBA—An Elba woman is in Coffee County Jail charged with murder in connection with a deadly stabbing in Elba Thursday evening.

Deloris Marquita Smith, 49, was arrested by Elba Police and booked into Coffee County Jail charged with murder at about 5:30 p.m. She is also charged with harassment.

According to Elba Police Department Investigator Lt. Russ Young, Thursday afternoon police responded to a call of a possible suicide at a residence on Caroline Street in Elba.

Upon arrival, police found Steve Magwood, 54, stabbed to death inside the house. As a result of the initial investigation, Smith was arrested, Young said.

"Due to this being an ongoing investigation, no further statements will be made at this time," he said, adding thanks to the Coffee County Sheriff's Office, 12th Judicial Circuit District Attorney James Tarbox, Enterprise Rescue, and Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham.
