Election 2024: San Bernardino County voters reject hotel tax increase

San Bernardino County voters have voted down taxing hotel guests more while approving higher pay for their sheriff, district attorney and other elected officials.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, with all precincts reporting in, 56.7% of voters were rejecting Measure K, while 62.7% of voters approved of Measure L.

Measure K is a proposed tax on guests at hotels , motels and inns in unincorporated San Bernardino County. Had it been approved, the tax would have increased from 7% to 11% and raised about $9 million annually — money the county said would have gone toward repairing roads, wildfire prevention, improving 911 emergency response times and addressing homelessness. The measure needed a simple majority to pass.

Measure L is a proposed charter amendment to provide "competitive compensation" for county elected officers, except for the Board of Supervisors and the county superintendent of schools. The measure's goal is to attract and retain qualified individuals to serve in these posts, plus it would establish a minimum funding formula for law enforcement officers patrolling unincorporated areas of the county. Measure L requires a simple majority to pass.

The San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters expects to post its next updated vote count at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7.
