Behind four tournament champions and a 5-1 head-to-head record against Weaver, the Enterprise girls wrestling team captured the team title at the Hewitt Grappling Girls Invite Wednesday at Hewitt-Trussville.

The Wildcats finished the 17-team meet with 177 points, edging out Weaver (172) by just five points. Enterprise wrestlers went 5-1 over the Bearcats with the biggest victory coming in the 132-pound weight class championship when Taimane Benemerito took a 7-5 decision over Weaver’s Mariah Johannson, a state runner-up from last year.

Also winning titles for Enterprise were defending state champions Evelyn Holmes-Smith and McKenzie Schultz along with last year’s state runner-up Mallory Ladd. Holmes-Smith won the 126-pound weight class, Schultz the 152 weight division and Ladd the 185 weight class.

Benemerito, Holmes-Smith and Schultz all went 5-0 during the tournament while Ladd went 4-0 after a first-round bye. Benemerito won her four other matches on first-minute pins. Holmes-Smith won all her matches on pins, all coming in the first period or the opening 20 seconds of the second period, while Schultz won all five of her matches on first-period pins. All four Ladd matches were won on first-period pins.

Israel Hart (285) placed second at the tournament, finishing with a 4-1 record. Ambrielle McKim (107) finished third, also finishing with a 4-1 tournament record.

Ally Wittman (120) and Avoniah Campbell (235) both placed fourth after both went 2-3 at the event. Olivia Callen (132) placed fifth, going 3-2.

Amy Familia (235, 1-4 record) and Aniya McGowan (235, 0-5) also competed for EHS.

EHS finishes third at Tuscaloosa meet: The Lady Wildcat wrestlers competed at the Ricky Miller Memorial Girls Tournament on Tuesday at Tuscaloosa County and finished third.

The Wildcats amassed 149 points behind Daphne (209) and Thompson (160) at the 11-team meet.

Holmes-Smith (126), Schultz (152) and Ladd (185) all won titles with Holmes-Smith and Schultz winning three matches each, all by first-round pins. Ladd had two first-period pins after a first-round bye.

Hart finished runner-up at 235, winning two matches before falling to Pinson Valley’s Aniyah Griffin in the weight class championship match.

Benemerito finished third, taking the third-place match over Oak Mountain’s Kathryn Alvis on a third-period pin. Her only loss was an 8-3 decision in the semifinals to Daphne’s Kaylse Hill.

Campbell placed third at 235 pounds, winning the third-place match on a first-period pin over Daphne’s Morgan Olvera, avenging a quarterfinal loss to the Trojan wrestler.

McKim (107) and Wittman (120) both finished in fourth place after 2-2 records, including a third-place match loss. Callen (138) finished fifth, going 2-2 at the tourney. Familia (235) went 1-3 and McGowan (235) went 0-2.
