Erie’s Public Schools Superintendent Polito to retire

Earlier today, Erie's Public Schools Superintendent Brian J. Polito informed district staff of his intent to retire, effective June 30, 2025.

"I have been incredibly honored to serve as superintendent of Erie's Public Schools during these last eight years. Together we've faced unprecedented challenges, including a pandemic that forced us to reimagine every aspect of our work, and also celebrated great successes: Our district has evolved from one that was mired in crisis to one that is receiving state and national recognition for its turnaround efforts and innovative programs," Polito wrote. "That transformation would not have happened without each one of you who work tirelessly to support our families and students. Thank you for the trust you've shown in me and our leadership team, and for the dedication and passion you bring to your job every day. Your work has been inspiring to witness.

"I am also indebted to our school board, our students and parents, our community partners, and our local legislators who have supported us every step of the way," Polito continued. "I'm so proud of what we've been able to accomplish working together and hope you are, too."

The School Board is expected to accept Polito's letter of intent at a special board meeting prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 2. At the Committee of the Whole meeting following, the board's Governance Committee will recommend a firm to lead a nationwide search for his successor. The full board is expected to vote to hire a firm at its Oct. 9 meeting.

"Know that the search process will be driven by stakeholders and include plenty of opportunity for input, and that I am fully confident in our School Board's ability to choose the next leader of our district," Polito wrote.
