  • Portland Winterhawks The Portland Winterhawks have lost 3 in a row, despite playing better in the last two games than they had in some of their wins. On Thursday against Kamloops, two power play goals early in the 3rd gave them a 2-1 lead and momentum, but they gave up the tying goal midway through the period and then lost on Tommy Lafreniere's goal in overtime.

They've gone wild on the power play in the 3 losses, scoring 8 goals. But at even strength they've scored 3 and allowed 17, which has put them dead last in even strength goal difference and even strength goals allowed. And they're facing a team who's near the top of the league at even strength.

A tough one here, and then a somewhat tough scheduling spot on Sunday in Tri-City. So they're facing the possibility of a 5-game losing streak if things don't go their way.

They could have used just a little bit more finish Thursday, but finishing numbers that were in the stratosphere helped get them a 6-1 record, and they're still way above average.

Buttazzoni serves game 2 of a 3-game suspension. He might have provided the finish that would have won it.

Chyzowski has a 4-game point streak after scoring one of the goals. He's tied for 2nd in the league in power play points.

Jugnauth has a 4-game point streak and still leads the league in power play points.

Thompson and Sotheran, up and down defensively so far, were up on Thursday.

They threw Marek Schlenker to the wolves against Prince George two weeks ago, and it turned out well. Will they do it again, with Štěbeták in a bit of a slump, having played in 5 straight games and with a game on Sunday?

Everett Silvertips Hunter Campbell scored 1:24 into overtime to win at Portland on November 16, 2021. That is the last time the Everett Silvertips won in Portland, a streak of 16 losses. Included are one regular season overtime loss, one shootout loss, and 5 playoff losses. It's a totally insane streak, given that the teams' records in that time are pretty close-Everett's might even be better.

They come in with a great chance to break it. They've been resting for a week after a successful 5-1 trip to the east, where they outscored the opposition 25-15. They lead the league in goal difference despite playing fewer games than the teams just behind them.

They beat Portland 8-2 in Everett on September 28, their first win and the Winterhawks' first loss of the season.

Three 7-goal scorers in MacKenzie, Bear, and Heslop. They all have shooting percentages over .200, so they might come back to the pack a bit. Heslop has a 8-game point streak, MacKenzie a 3-game streak.

Maze, Kaplan, Brown, and Cooper are all listed as day-to-day. I guess the Winterhawks could hope they all are out and Everett could skate with 10 forwards.

They're loaded here, with three NHL draft picks (Jamieson, Hammell, and Smith), a 10th overall WHL draftee (Liske), and the exceptional 15-year-old 1st overall pick in DuPont.

Smith leads all WHL defensemen in points. DuPont is one behind him. DuPont is second in the league in shots per game by defensemen, so he's done more than just try to fit in.

Sanche has been strong as the Silvertips look for a goalie who can avoid losing them games. So far so good; the next step will be how things react when he has a minor slump.
