Exactly When To See 2024’s Final ‘Supermoon’ Rise This Week
When is the next full moon? The eleventh and penultimate full moon 2024 — the "Beaver Moon" — will also be the fourth and final "supermoon" of 2024.
Best-looking as it rises into the eastern sky during dusk just as the sun sets in the west, November's full moon is named the "Beaver Moon," but also the "Mourning Moon" and the "Frost Moon."
Here's everything you need to know about it, including exactly when, where and how to see the next full moon at its best from where you are:
When Is The Next Full Moon? The next full moon is the "Beaver Moon," which will turn full at 21:28 UTC/4:28 p.m. EST on Friday, Nov. 15, but the best time to watch it rise will be moonrise on Saturday, Nov. 16. That will coincide with — and somewhat ruin — the peak of the annual Leonid meteor shower.
Why The 'Beaver Moon' Is Also A 'Supermoon'The full "Beaver Moon" will be a technical "supermoon," which can appear to be about 10% larger in apparent size. The third-smallest of 2024's four "supermoons" will be 224,853 miles (361,866 kilometers) from Earth. Since the moon's orbital path around Earth is a slight ellipse, there's a near-point (perigee) and a far-point (apogee) every month.
"Supermoon" is an astrological term for a perigee full moon, which is slightly bigger and brighter than the average full moon. Astronomers define a perigee full moon as one that occurs "within 90% of its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit."
Best Time To See The Full 'Beaver Moon'A full moon looks best when it appears on the eastern horizon just after the sun has set in the west. It will look more prominent than usual and be a beautiful, muted orange. The best time to view it will be a few minutes after moonrise where you are , though it depends on your location.
Saturday, November 16Get somewhere high up that faces east, or visit an east-facing coast, both of which will give you a clear view of the horizon — and the best views of the "Beaver Moon," clear skies allowing.
Naked eyes are just fine for observing the full moon, but any pair of binoculars will give you a superb close-up.
When Is The Next Full Moon? The next full moon after the "Beaver Moon" will be the full "Cold Moon" at 9:01 UTC/4:01 a.m. ET on Sunday, December 15 — the third full moon of fall and the final of the 12 full moons in 2024.
Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
