Ex-Jets QB is in utter disbelief: They have ‘no clue what they’re doing’

Four days after the New York Jets ’ embarrassing loss to the Dolphins, Boomer Esiason is still at a loss for words.

Like Jets fans, he can’t believe they gave up a 99-yard touchdown — a TD! — on a Hail Mary attempt late in the second quarter as they proceeded to be outscored 24-7 and lose 34-13 .

“The Jets quarterback situation is like, you go from a Hall of Famer for four effing plays to guys that have no clue what they’re doing on the field,” the 14-year veteran QB who played three seasons with the Jets said on his WFAN radio show Monday .

Esiason was quick to say that he did not blame quarterback Tim Boyle for the Fail Mary or the Jets’ struggles. Boyle went 27 of 38 for 179 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first start since January 2022.

On the interception that underscored the Jets’ 4-7 record and overall failure this season, Dolphins safety Jevon Holland went untouched to the end zone. It was the first Hail Mary interception for a touchdown since at least 2006 when ESPN began tracking such plays . To make matters worse, it came less than a minute after the Jets returned a 30-yard pick for a touchdown of their own to pull within 10-6.

“There are things that happen during Jets games that you just can’t explain,” Esiason said via Audacy . “Those things have happened in other games. You’ve seen guys go down, you’ve seen interceptions returned for touchdowns. I’ve covered the NFL for 23 years now, played in the league. ... I have never seen a Hail Mary returned for a touchdown. I couldn’t put it into words. I was aghast.”
