YMCA wins Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis
The Wilkes-Barre YMCA won the Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis. About
$15,000 was raised during the Nov. 28 event in which 235 people participated.
The Greater Scranton YMCA was second and Moses Taylor Hospital took third.
The top male runner was C.Z. Pictruszkiewicz with a time of 16:35 and the
top female runner was Michele Wolyniec with a time of 19:22. Jim Hopper was
the top male walker with a time of 28:17. Jennifer Hoover was the top female
walker with a time of 29:56.
King’s players named MAC Freedom players of the week
King’s College basketball players Joanne Polakoski and Corey Dickerson have
been named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League women’s and men’s
players of the week.
A senior forward from Meyers, Polakoski led King’s to a 2-0 week by
averaging 23 points and 15.5 rebounds per game. She scored 22 points with 16
rebounds in a victory against Lycoming, then had 24 points and 15 rebounds in
the Lady Monarchs’ triumph over FDU-Madison. Polakoski has been named the
player of the week each of the first two weeks this season.
Dickerson led the Monarchs to a 3-0 week and King’s first four game winning
streak since the 1993-94 season. He averaged 21.7 points, 4.7 assists, 2.0
steals, and 2.3 rebounds. Dickerson also scored a game-high 26 points in the
Monarchs 89-75 upset of Lycoming.
King’s faces Wilkes University tonight at the Marts Center. The women’s
game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men’s contest to follow at 8 p.m.
McCall honored at Misericordia athletics banquet
Former Lake-Lehman High School athletic standout Jen McCall was presented
with the volleyball Coach’s Award at the College Misericordia Fall Athletic
Awards Banquet.
A freshman with the women’s volleyball team, McCall played in all 78 games
for the Cougars. She had 247 receptions and 143 digs while helping the Cougars
to a 17-11 record and a spot in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
semi-finals.
The Coach’s Award is presented to an athlete who best demonstrates
leadership and dedication.
High Schools
WVW water polo players named all state
Members of the state champion Wyoming Valley West High School girl’s water
polo team have been named all-state.
The team recently won the 1999 Pennsylvania Scholastic Water Polo League
Women’s State Championship. The team defeated last year’s champion, North Penn
High School.
JoAnn Fimowicz, Toni Fimowicz, Jennifer Rosick and Shana Welch earned
first-team all state honors. Danielle Chipego and Michelle Goff were named to
the second team and Kelly Chamberlain was named to the third team. Members of
the Wyoming Valley West water polo team are Cathy Roberts and Amanda Oriel, in
the front row. In the second row are Megan Panowicz, Kelsey Kowalski, JoAnn
Fomowicz, Emily Kluger, Jen Byczek, Shana Welch, Kathryn Whitelock, Kelly
Chamberlain, coach Frank Tribendis, Cara Divine and Lyndsay Pascoe. Karissa
Capitan, Michelle Goff, Toni Fimowicz, Jennifer Rosick, Amanda Nogic, Deanna
Mikhalkova and Liz Goss are in the back row.
