Falcons vs. Seahawks: A look at the series history going into 2024

C.Thompson28 min ago
The Falcons and the Seahawks have a bit of a peculiar thing going when it comes to their all time head to head series matchup. It's one where the Seahawks have a better record, they lead the series 12-9 all time. However, the Falcons have had by far the biggest and most important wins between the two.

Just like most opponents outside the NFC South, the Seahawks for the most part dominated the Falcons up until the arrival of Matt Ryan, going 8-3 in that time, including eight wins in the first 10 all time matchups. Then Chris Redman put together a four touchdown/zero interception masterpiece in a 44-41 win in the 2007 season finale.

Ryan went an overall 5-3 against Seattle (Atlanta lost one in 2019, but Matt Schaub played that game due to a Ryan injury), and in the mid-2010s Atlanta perfected the art of terrorizing the famed Legion of Boom in what was a golden era for both franchises.

First, Ryan got his first ever playoff victory in the 2012 Divisional Round against a Seattle team that had finally broken out through the efforts of young talent, thanks to a last minute Matt Bryant game winning field goal.

Ryan had to wait four years for his next playoff victory against this same Seattle team in that same Divisional Round, in the same venue (the Georgia Dome), in the 2016 playoffs. That was a 36-20 walloping which was actually even more of a blowout than the scoreline indicates.

Finally, Atlanta had a massive head-to-head victory in the 2017 regular season on Monday Night Football, where Blair Walsh missed a potential game tying field goal as time expired, which ultimately was the reason why the Falcons made the playoffs over the Seahawks that year.

None of Seattle's wins against Atlanta have ever matched those three in terms of importance and weight.

Last Meeting The Falcons were coming off of two tight losses against the New Orleans Saints (where they blew a lead) and the Los Angeles Rams (where they almost came all the way back) to open the 2022 season, with Marcus Mariota ushering in the post Matt Ryan era as the starting quarterback.

It was a bit of a scoring exhibition in the first half, as out of a collective 10 drives between these teams seven ended in points, with Seattle taking a 20-17 lead into the break.

Atlanta found something that worked behind a career day from Cordarrelle Patterson, who had a career high 141 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 17 attempts (8.2 yards per carry) as the Seattle defense was overmatched all afternoon.

Drake London's second career touchdown reception, in his third career game, ended being the game winning score late in the third quarter as no points were put up in the fourth. The Atlanta defense clamped down on Geno Smith's final two drives, and a Richie Grant interception was the final stamp needed for the victory.

Seattle ultimately bounced back from this defeat and ended up making the playoffs as a wildcard representative, while Atlanta suffered what would be its second of three consecutive 7-10 seasons.
