Fatal weekend shooting under investigation

Nov. 12—Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate a deadly weekend shooting in Hartshorne.

Hartshorne Police Chief Jerry Ford in a statement said officers responded Sunday morning to a reported home invasion and shooting on N. 13th Street in Hartshorne.

Ford said officers found 44-year-old Thomas Bradford "unresponsive with what appeared to be a gunshot wound" inside of a camper on the property.

"Hartshorne and Haileyville Police Officers immediately began performing lifesaving measure, but Bradford's injuries were fatal," Ford said in his statement. "He was pronounced dead at the scene."

Due to Bradford's Native American status and the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma, officers from the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse and agents from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI were called to assist in the investigation along with deputies from the Pittsburg County Sherrif's Office.

Ford said a Wilburton man was identified as a possible suspect was later taken into custody.

After further investigation, Ford said it was determined that "Bradford appeared inside" the camper "wearing a mask and was armed with a shotgun" and a struggle over the shotgun ended with Bradford being shot.

The suspect was later release after witness statements were collected, according to Ford.

"This case is still under investigation by Choctaw Nation Lighthorse and the FBI" Ford said in his statement.

A senior police officer warned Tuesday of calls for more rioting in Amsterdam, after dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set a tram on fire Monday night and the city faces tensions following violence last week targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club. Olivier Dutilh, of the Amsterdam police force, told a court hearing that "we have signals that there are calls for similar" unrest in the west of the city. The Amsterdam mayor, chief of police and top public prosecutor published a report Monday outlining what happened last week, including new details about actions by Maccabi Tel Aviv fans ahead of the Maccabi Tel Aviv-Ajax soccer match.

Former U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a New York Republican who resigned from Congress following a tax fraud conviction, is paralyzed from the chest down after being thrown from a horse during a polo tournament, according to friends who are raising funds to pay for the ex-lawmaker's medical care. Grimm, 54, suffered the devastating injury in September and is now being treated at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey, where the late actor Christopher Reeve was treated after a similar equestrian accident in 1995, according to Vincent Ignizio, a friend of Grimm's who is a former New York City Council member. "It was a passion of his and he suffered a tragic accident at the end of September," said Ignizio, who has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for Grimm's medical care.
