AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Many in the area who were impacted by Hurricane Helene are working to determine their options for resources.

FEMA has opened its Disaster Recovery Center downtown at the Hub, where those impacted by the storm can meet one-on-one with a FEMA Representative.

"Our FEMA representative at the Hub at this particular DRC they are there to help disaster survivors recover from Helene," said Nikki Gaskins Campbell, Media Relations Specialist. "We understand that they're probably under a lot of stress from the disaster that happened in their state. So, we want to try to meet the disaster survivor where they are and their current situation. It is your one-stop shop."

Despite waiting in line at the recovery center for hours, many people we spoke with had nothing but nice things to say about those who were helping them navigate their recovery.

"We've been through a lot financially. You know you lost your electricity, your food, you know, power outages," said Lisa Jennings, Helene Survivor. "Damage to your property and to hear that FEMA's helping us is a blessing, and I let them know that."

Those in line were able to wait inside or get a number and go and sit in their cars while waiting to be called. Those I spoke to enjoyed their time staying there and being able to commemorate those in the same situation and the workers.

"The workers have been kind. They have been providing, you know, water and everything and just making people laugh as the time passes," said Torey Herron, Helene Survivor.

"They are very nice people. They're very helpful, they have the time, they're very patient with us. And they understand our care right now," said Sidney Mobley, Helene Survivor. "Our concerns A lot of activity, a lot of conversations with people and people laughing and just having a good time."

You do not have to live in Richmond County to go to the recovery center. FEMA representatives say you should go to whichever recovery center is most convenient for you.
