Oct. 18—MYSTIC — Old Mystic firefighters and state explosive specialists were in the process of removing a corroded acetylene tank from a Smith Street barn Friday night.

Old Mystic Fire Department Chief Ken Richards said an individual walked into the station earlier in the afternoon and reported finding an "unstable" scuba-sized tank while cleaning out a barn at 16 Smith St.

Richards said firefighters examined the badly deteriorated tank and called in Stonington police and the state's Fire and Explosion Investigative Unit. He said the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection were also on scene as of 6:15 p.m.

Richards said the town's reverse-911 system will be used to keep nearby residents informed on any necessary safety precautions.
