COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Firefighters successfully protected homes after a fire ignited in a southwest Springs neighborhood Saturday.

The fire department started receiving several 911 call around 4 p.m. about smoke in the middle of Broadmoor Bluffs, a neighborhood nestled just below Cheyenne Mountain.

"We got a lot of calls on it because you could see it from a distance," said Lt. Brian Ebmeyer.

The fire started in a wooded area running behind Kincaid Court and Star Ranch Road, surrounded by houses on all sides.

"It's in a very difficult - some difficult terrain, very sloped terrain, and there is scrub oak and whatnot," Ebmeyer said. "Getting access to it was our main problem."

Fire engines set up along Kincaid Court as crews tried to access the flames. With such close proximity to homes, structure protection was priority, Ebmeyer said.

"We put people in behind houses to protect those structures first of all. ... We're protecting those homes that are close by because we know how valuable those are to our citizens."

The fire was declared under control about an hour and a half after firefighters first got on scene. CSFD praised the vigilant citizens who alerted them to the fire, stating that the fast response likely saved homes. No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

CSFD has not provided a size of the fire at the time of this writing. A cause is also still under investigation.
