MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — On Saturday, the first class of students officially graduated from the West Virginia Junior College (WVJC) School of Nursing at Mon Health.

The 18-month, hybrid associates degree program was first announced in 2022 as a collaboration between the college and hospital to provide more options for prospective nursing students in north central West Virginia. Now, in November 2024, about 40 students became the first graduating class of the program.

Samantha Esposito, Campus President of WVJC, said in an interview with 12 News that they saw a need for a hybrid nursing program during the COVID-19 pandemic, which would allow students from around the state to pursue their degree who otherwise may have been unable to.

"After we launched that program we saw there was a great need and a great desire for students to be able to have that hybrid option, where they're doing lecture classes online and going to hospital facilities to do their lab and clinical," Esposito said.

"It's never too early or it's never too late. We have a wide variety and wide range of students, and that if you're thinking about it to reach out, because there's always a possibility for people to follow their dreams and we're there to help them along the way."
