The event will open with Barb Brayfield presenting a program on "Native American Plants and Traditional Herbs" at 1 p.m. This will be followed by the music group Big Spike Hammer playing traditional bluegrass music at 2:30 p.m.

Other activities at the open house will include children's yard games, spinning and weaving demonstrations, and blacksmithing demonstrations. The Five Mile House Gift Wagon and other vendors will be open for business. Admission will be free.

The Five Mile House and its 1880 barn event venue are at the northeast corner of Illinois 130 south and Westfield Road, south of Charleston. The house is thought to have been built in the mid- to late 1840s, and it served as a way station for early settlers in Coles County during its first decades.
