Flames' MacKenzie Weegar reacts to first career OT winner
The Calgary Flames were down and out for most of their game on Monday night. A first-period goal from Vegas Golden Knights star William Karlsson had Calgary chasing the contest. However, they found their game in the third when AJ Greer tied the game. And in overtime, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar completed the comeback victory .
Weegar carried the puck through the neutral zone and down the right wing. He ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle, and it found its way passed Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill. The goal marked the first overtime-winning goal for the Flames defenseman in his career.
“It comes at the right time against a great team ... That’s exciting. It's fun. That’s the true C of Red that I heard out there,” he said after the game , via Calgary's Postmedia beat reporter Wes Gilbertson.
Calgary had peppered Hill with shots throughout the game. The Vegas puck-stopper faced 34 shots, saving 32. However, it was Flames goalie Dan Vladar who stood tall. He stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced to keep his team in the game and eventually emerge victorious.
Once again, Calgary has avoided losing two in a row. Stringing together wins has been a bit of an issue throughout the season. In fact, their longest winning streak is just two games. They have done well to bounce back from a brutal 2-7-1 start to the year, though.
The Flames certainly hope a win over a team like the Golden Knights can be the start of something special. Calgary takes the ice again on Thursday when they welcome the Dallas Stars to town.
