GENESEE COUNTY - Voters in District 9 have a new representative on the Genesee County Board of Commissioners.

Republican Brian K. Flewelling defeated Democrat Wendy Wolcott in the race, according to unofficial results from the county Clerk's Office in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Flewelling received 13,642 votes compared to 10,330 votes for Wolcott, according to the unofficial results.

District 9 includes Forest Township, Otisville, Genesee Township, Richfield Township, Davison, and a portion of Davison Township.

Flewelling, a Davison native, is the Davison-Richfield fire chief. He won 55% of the vote in the Republican primary, defeating incumbent Commissioner Michelle Davis, D-Richfield Twp., after Davis switched parties.

Wolcott, a member of the Mott Community College Board of Trustees, defeated Mo A. Aboneaaj in the Democratic primary election, taking 70% of the vote.

With victories by Flewelling and Gary L. Goetzinger in District 3 on Tuesday, Republicans will hold three of the nine seats on the county board once results have been certified by the county Board of Canvassers.

Commissioners are responsible for adopting an annual budget for county government and oversight of several departments and offices, including the Sheriff's Department, Prosecutor's Office, Clerk's Office, and Treasurer's Office.

The nine commissioners are elected to four-year terms on a partisan basis, each representing a different region of the county.

Members of the commission earn $36,984 annually and the board chair earns an additional $4,121 annually.
