BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - The majority of Americans are not only gearing up for the election, but the stress or potential stress that comes along with it.

According to the American Psychological Association, 77% of adults are concerned about the future of the nation.

Sacha Bradley with Brazos Valley Mental Health and Wellness said while it's important to stay informed, it's equally important to remember what we can and cannot control.

"We do what we can, but then we have to let go and practice our healthy coping skills. Taking a pause from social media and news outlets, make sure you're taking care of yourself, eating right, taking a walk," she listed. "Those kind of things are crucial at this time."

Some techniques Bradley encouraged to begin as soon as you can and continue throughout the Election Day process.

"I always tell my patients to practice deep breathing techniques. So, breathing in for five, hold for four, breathing out for five. You can do that anywhere at any time, and the five senses: Five things you can hear and so on for things you can see. It's basically about grounding; mindfulness tools to keep you in the present," advised Bradley.

For disagreements in the hotly contested race, Bradley suggested practicing compassion towards others.

"They have the right to share their opinion, just as you do, and if we can just be kind humans at this time, I think we can go through this much stronger than before," Bradley said.

If you're experiencing a spiral, Bradley recommends taking a pause from discourse.

"It's really important to recognize that we do have that ability to get caught up in the moment and caught up in a hole where we don't want to be, and so if we recognize that, 'okay, I need to pause.' Maybe talking to a friend, using your supports is very important during this time," added Bradley.
